In recent years, Mr. Ilyumzhinov, who became president in 1995, has been criticized for failing to gain corporate sponsorship for tournaments and neglecting the development of new players and public interest in the game. His opponent in the last election, the former world champion Anatoly Karpov, ran on a platform of bringing professional management to the organization.
