Curious Interview With the Head of the Chess Federation
By DYLAN LOEB MCCLAIN In a recent interview, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the president of the World Chess Federation and the small Russian republic of Kalmykia, talked about his belief in astrology, his meeting with mystic Baba Vanga, and the time that he supposedly gave Bobby Fischer $100,000 as payment for lost royalties from the unauthorized translation into Russian of his book, “My 60 Memorable Games.”
He also mentions having a planet, 55-70, named after him: Planet Kirsan.
Among the famous people Ilyumzhinov says that he has met and played chess with is Chuck Norris, with whom he said he made a bet that the actor has yet to pay off.
The claims made by Ilyumzhinov in the interview, which is on the Web site “Chess in Translation,” cannot be verified, but they are interesting.
