Con una Defensa Lasker del Gambito de Dama Rehusado, la partida de hoy parecía destinada a ser un mero preámbulo de la jornada de desempate, pero especialmente en este duelo por el título mundial, no se puede vender la piel del oso antes de cazarlo. Con 30... f5 (Diagrama) Anand planteó una entrega de peón envenenada. ¿Quién dijo miedo? Topalov se metió de lleno en las complicaciones aceptando el envite, pero el que salió a flote tras la marejada subsiguiente fue el jugador indio. Llegó al control de la jugada 40 ya en franquía. Aunque el búlgaro intento complicar las cosas todo lo que pudo, en el movimiento 56 tuvo que inclinar su rey, ya que Vishy en esta ocasión no perdonó. Nota curiosa: ha sido la única victoria con negras del duelo.

Game 4: Anand leads by one point after the second Catalan opening in the match

The fourth game of the FIDE World Chess Championship match between Viswanathan Anand of India and Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria saw another Catalan opening on the board. This is the first opening that was played twice in the match, the players are obviously willing to have a theoretical discussion.

Topalov was the one to deviate from the second game, as early as on move 5, when he played the sharper Bb4+ instead of a6.

Similar to the earlier Catalan game, Black clutched onto the extra pawn while White tried to take advantage of his faster pieces' development.

Anand aggressively advanced in the center to break opponent's pawn formation and open up the files and diagonals. At the same time, Topalov was carefully clearing the queenside in order to reduce the positional pressure.

The game appeared to be taking a normal course but then Anand's sudden Knight movement (e3-g4) caught Topalov without guard and on the wrong foot.

Not hesitating much, Anand knocked a piece sacrifice on h6 and picked a strong attack against the Black King.

Still precision was needed in carrying out the assault, but Anand never blinked and found the crushing 25. e5!

Topalov continued for a few moves more, but resigned at the imminent danger of a mate. Anand takes the lead in the match 2,5-1,5, tomorrow is a rest day and the games continue on Friday at 15:00.

After two decisive games, Game 3 of the World Championship match in Sofia, Bulgaria, ended peacefully Tuesday with a draw. The match score in the best-of-12 match is now 1.5-1.5.
Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, the challenger, had White, as in Game 1, and again opened with 1 d4. Viswanathan Anand of India, the champion, who had blundered badly in Game 1 after he used the Grunfeld Defense, switched openings in Game 3, opting for the solid Slav Defense.
Topalov tried to steer the game toward complicated and unclear positions, which he likes, by offering a pawn sacrifice at a couple of junctures. But Anand avoided any risks, declining Topalov’s offers and consistently choosing the least dangerous continuation. After about 30 moves, most of the pieces had been traded and there were no more dynamic possibilities in the position, so the players repeated moves to create a draw.
Game 4 is Wednesday.

Viswanathan Anand immediately struck back in the second game of the World Championship match in Sofia, Bulgaria. He defeated Veselin Topalov in 42 moves with the white pieces in a Catalan, to level the score. Video added.

The match will take place April 21 – May 12 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Venue is the Central Military Club in Sofia, Bulgaria. The match will consist of 12 games, and if necessary, a 4-game rapid tiebreak, if necessary 5 2-game blitz matches and if necessary 1 sudden death game. The classical games will be played in pairs of 2, so there will be a rest day after every 2 games. No postponements are allowed. Topalov has White in games 1,3,5,8, 10 and 12.

Veselin Toplaov of Bulgaria got off to a great start in the world championship match as he won Game 1 after Viswanathan Anand of India, the world champion, blundered. The game was barely out of the opening stages when Anand erred in a dynamically balanced position. Facing checkmate, he resigned after only 30 moves.

It was a startlingly quick and unexpected beginning to a match that many experts have said is too close to call. Anand, who has been world champion since 2007, is ranked No. 4 in the world, but has been been ranked No. 1. His ranking has slipped recently as he prepared to defend his title. Topalov is ranked No. 2 and was a world champion from 2005 to 2006, when the title was split because of a rift in the chess world. He lost a bitter title reunification match in 2006 to Vladimir Kramnik of Russia.

The match is being played in Sofia, Bulgaria, and has a prize fund of two million euros (about $2.7 million). Though the match is being played on Topalov’s home turf, and therefore seems to give him an advantage, Bulgaria was selected as the host because the Bulgarian Chess Federation was able to raise the largest purse.

The match was supposed to begin on Friday, but was delayed by one day as Anand had a terrible time reaching Bulgaria because of the recent shutdown of airports across Europe. He made it as far as Frankfurt, Germany, and then had to drive 40 hours, arriving a few days later than he had planned.

He asked to postpone the match by several days, but the World Chess Federation pushed it back by only one. It is possible that the disruptions to Anand’s pre-match preparations contributed to his loss in Game 1.

Losing Game 1 in a 12-game match is not good, but it is not fatal. In his 2006 match against Kramnik, Topalov lost the first two games before rallying to take the lead after Game 9. Subsequently, Kramnik tied the match and won it in overtime.

The question now is how will Anand will respond? Game 2 is Sunday.

At the beginning there was a minute of silence in the memory of the former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch, who passed away in Barcelona. After the introduction, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria and Chairman of the Organizing Committee Boiko Borisov was invited to give a speech. He greeted the players, guests and journalists, highlighted the importance of the match for Bulgaria and entire chess world, and wished luck to both players. It is obvious that this is an "Event of Force Majeure" [pages 2 and 12 (article 11) of our 2010 World Chess Championship Agreement] which has resulted in an unfair position for World Champion Vishy Anand as he has not taken full benefit of the seven-days period (article 8.2 of our 2010 World Chess Championship Agreement) in order for him to acclimatize to the conditions and ensure that all his team will be organised to support him logistically and technically in the match. b) According to the 2010 World Chess Championship Agreement, the final inspection of the match was to be held on the 18th April 2010, five (5) days before the 1st game (article 3.9). This deadline was not followed due to the Organiser’s delay and it has been agreed by all parties that the final inspection will be held on the morning of the 21st April 2010. Therefore a postponement is also needed in order to secure that all organisational requirements will be met in the remaining three days before the start of the match in lieu of the five days originally envisaged for such compliance. The FIDE World Chess Championship match between the reigning World Champion Viswanathan Anand of India and his challenger Former World Champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria is set to start on the 21st April with the official opening ceremony. The match is taking place at the Central Military Club in Sofia, Bulgaria. The total prize fund 2.000.000 EUR, full regulations can be found here, the updated playing schedule is posted bellow. Viswanathan Anand won the World Championship in 2000 under knockout system and held the title until 2002. In 2007 he reclaimed the throne by winning the double round-robin World Championship tournament in Mexico. He successfully defended the title in the match against Vladimir Kramnik, which was held in 2008 in Bonn, Germany. Veselin Topalov became the World Champion after winning the first double round-robin World Championship Tournament in 2005 in San Luis, Argentina. He lost the title in 2006, following the unification match against Vladimir Kramnik in Elista, Russia. He again earned the right to challenge the World Champion by winning the 2009 match versus Gata Kamsky. Anand has arrived to Sofia by car and asked for a three day postponement. Closed German airspace prevented him from flying by plane. FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos in his capacity of FIDE Supervisor for the match decided to postpone the first game for one day. The final inspection took place on Wednesday morning, followed by the press conference with both players. En la cuarta partida estuvo sometido a presión por parte de Peter Leko y se vio forzado a pasar la aspiradora al tablero y limpiarlo de peones, terminando con un alfil contra dos. El encuentro ajedrecístico más llamativo de este año en Hungría será el duelo entre la estrella húngara y GM Péter Lékó y el Campeón del Mundo, el GM indio Vishy Anand.

El acontecimiento tiene lugar entre el 2 y el 7 de junio de 2009 en Miskolc (Hungría) Las partidas, que se disputan en la modalidad de ajedrez rápido, comienzan a las 16:30 CEST y 18:00 CEST. El control de tiempo de las partidas es de 25 minutos para todos los movimientos, con 10 segundos de incremento por movimiento. En el caso de que hubiese un empate a cuatro, se disputaría una partida de ajedrez relámpago para determinar el vencedor.

Habrá retransmisiones de las partidas en directo en el sitio web oficial y en Playchess.com. Habrá una breve rueda de prensa al final de cada jornada con ambos jugadores, que durará entre 10 y 15 minutos.

23.Dg3! Mantener la dama es el plan más fuerte. Al mismo tiempo en mi opinión (IM Meszaros) el cambio de damas era una posibilidad razonable. La pareja de alfiles significa una importante ventaja en posiciones como ésta (estructura de peones simétrica, con ausencia de peones centrales) y las negras no pueden construir fácilmente una fortaleza en el flanco de dama debido a los dos peones avanzados a6-b5. Tenemos que mencionar que la presión de tiempo no ayudaba ni al bando atacante ni al defensor. ¿Cálculo de variantes que consume tiempo o una larga y segura ventaja en el final?
