The XXV Bermuda Open Tournament was held at the end of January (January 30 - February 2) as usual under the direction of the Bermuda Federation presided by Mr. Larry Ebbin and Mr. Nigel Freeman, FIDE Treasurer.
Bermuda, located in the middle of North Atlantic is a group of small islands formed millions years ago by a submerged volcano whose extinct crater occupies the centre of a sea water sound surrounded by land with lots of small beautiful beaches and landscapes.
Being since its discovery an important naval base you can find ancient fortress anywhere.
The tournament, held at a five stars hotel and conducted by IA Carol Jarecki, (BVI), developed in a very friendly atmosphere in which Title Holders and local players struggled during the event.
I attend the tournament under a Nigel´s kind invitation and after arriving form Boston where a snow storm was blowing hard I was surprised by the mild weather due to being Bermuda in the path of the Gulf Stream, resembling more the Caribbean than the North Atlantic.
The attention given by the Organizers was wonderful and after a dramatic blitz tie-brake GM Pascal Charbonneau, (CAN) got the first place.
I shall let the comments of the tournament for the experts, only remains to be said the comments of the closing ceremony held at a classic English Pub where a nice dinner was served and where lots of prizes were given under the direction of a happy Mr. Freeman, dressed in a mixed Bermuda and Kalmyk style.
So finished the Bermuda 2009 Open, leaving only the wish of being back!

TORNEO BERMUDA 2009
Bermuda es una isla situada en el medio del Atlántico Norte, a una distancia casi similar de América y Europa, es pequeña, compuesta de varias islas de unos 40 Kms. de largo en total y estrecha.Su formación data de millones de años atrás cuando un volcán submarino hizo erupción creándola. El antiguo cráter sumergido ocupa el centro de una especie de laguna de agua salada rodeada por las islas.
Situada en el medio de la Corriente del Golfo su clima es subtropical pudiéndose ver gran cantidad de formaciones coralinas en sus costas. Prácticamente esta toda edificada, lo que hace que casi todos los productos que se consumen sean importados.Colonia inglesa desde su descubrimiento tuvo siempre una gran importancia estratégica que llegó a su clímax durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Está rodeada de fortificaciones que datan del Siglo XVII.
De alto ingreso promedio sus principales fuentes son los servicios financieros y el turismo.Desde hace 25 años Bermuda es sede de un tradicional torneo que se efectúa a fines de Enero, por donde han desfilado notables figuras del ajedrez bajo la incasable actividad de la Federación y el entusiasmo del Sr. Nigel Freeman, Tesorero de la FIDE.Cumpliendo una amable invitación este año asistí a las Bodas de Plata del evento, partí desde Boston bajo una tormenta de nieve y para mi sorpresa encontré a mi llegada un clima propio de las islas del Caribe.
El evento se desarrolló en el Hotel Fairmont Princess, un 5 estrellas situado en la isla Oeste, que comenzó con un blitz para seguir con un abierto a 5 rondas donde se mezclaban Grandes Maestros y titulados internacionales con los entusiastas jugadores locales todo bajo un ambiente amistoso, sin incidente alguno, contando con la impecable dirección del la AI Carol Jarecki de Islas Vírgenes Británicas.La clausura se llevó a cabo en la Somerset Pub, un restaurante inglés típico, bajo la conducción de Nigel y Larry, donde abundaron los premios y sorprendió la vestimenta de Nigel, una mezcla de la usanza típica de Bermuda con el toque de Kalmikia donde Nigel ha sido oficial de la FIDE muchas veces.

From 15 to 24 February 2009 a FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar was organized in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, by the Puerto Rico Chess Federation, under the auspices of FIDE.
The Lecturer was IA Jorge Vega (PUR), President of Americas Chess Federation and member of the FIDE Arbiters’ Council.
15 people participated in the Seminar and in the examination test that was held after the end of the lectures.
The following six(6) succeeded in the test and will be awarded the title of FIDE Arbiter after the approval of the next FIDE Presidential Board:
Omar Aneses Bocanegra 93%, Pedro A Mendez Guzman 90%, Luis Sosa Trani 89%, Edwin G Delgado 81%, Cristobal Vega Adrana 80% and Sarymar Prado Benitez 80%.
