FIDE Master DelisleWarner Upsets Grandmaster Alonso Zapata in RBTT Heroes Day Cup
Former National Champion, FIDE Master Delisle Warner had a perfect start in the opening match of the 2010 RBTT sponsored Heroes Day Cup International Chess Tournament when he upset Top Seed Grandmaster Alonso Zapata of Colombia on Board 1.
Warner, one of the three players in the R BTT Masters Section vying for an International Master norm, maintained the pressure on the Colombian Grandmaster who, in attempting to defuse Warner’s attack on the Queenside, made an out of charter error which not only lost him a Bishop but allowed Warner’s Queen and Rooks into a menacing position against an exposed King.

Clearly aware of the deep trouble the Zapata found himself in, Warner with surgical precision sacrifice his advanced queen knight pawn to draw one of Zapata’s key defending Rooks away from the aid of his King and quickly force the submission of the Top Seed, who resigned at shortly afterwards.

In other RBTT Masters matches, Duane Rowe of Jamaica also had a fine start, scoring an upset win when he ground out a hard fought 63 move victory against Number 2 Seed, International Masters Kevin Denny of Barbados.
The run against the top seeds in the RBTT Masters was made complete when International Master Terry Farley quickly dispatched Number 3 Seed, FIDE Master Bengt Hammar of Sweden in just 25 moves.
In the RBTT Candidates Section, Defending Champion and Number 2 Seed Gilles Suez-Panama of Martinique had a comfortable start to his title defense when the young Jakeel Harewood of The Lodge School, trying to mix things up with the Frenchman, dropped a Knight and received an object lesson on the
power of pin.
Unlike the RBTT Maters Section, results for all the top seeds, except the Number 8 Seed Dwayne Glikes of Barbados, went according to plan. Top Seed Equitable Browne of Jamaica had a cameo 14 move win against Coleridge & Parry’s Christopher Gibson while the Martinique trio of Manuel Mortabord, Marceline Philippe and Karl Rapon, the Numbers 3, 4 and 5 Seeds, were in winners row against The Lodge School’s Jerome Harewood and Orlando Husbands, and a forfeiting Adrian Jackman who fail to show for his
game.
The top two seeded players from Barbados in the RBTT Candidates, Number 6 and 7 Seeds, Demetrio Moore and Othneil Harewood won against Under 16 Champion Justin Maloney of The Lodge School and Dario Mayers who defaulted his game.
The only upset of the RBTT Candidates was registered by The Lodge School’s Bryan Prescod who took out Number 8 Seed Dwayne Gilkes in a flurry of tactics after Gilkes, thinking he was trapping Prescod’s Bishop, found his King running for his dear life, a race he sadly did not win.

In other RBTT Candidates matches, Barbados Under-14 Champion Kemp Lynch of Garrison Secondary beat Sheena Ramsay, Dominic Del Castilho, the brother of reigning Barbados Champion Martyn Del Castilho, had a fine return to tournament chess winning against Allon Richards of Foundation School, Corrie Elcock won against Rohansonn Waithe of Harrison College and Amilton Wilson beat Juanita Garnett.
