The first round of the EICC was full of unexpected results, however, it cannot be even compared to the number of surprises in round 2. This time the rating favorites Vallejo and Akopian won, but this was blured by the underdogs success in many other games.
GM Sanan Sjugirov, who recently received personally his title from the FIDE President Kirsan Ilymzhinov, defeated the second of Veselin Topalov - GM Ivan Cheparinov. GM Naiditsch and GM Dreev were effectively stopped by GM Grigoriants and GM Andriasian, while the European champion GM Tiviakov was held to a draw by GM Valerij Popov. Tomorrow the top table pairings include Banikas - Akopian, Bosiocic - Bologan, Yemelin - Volokitin, Tomashevsky - Romanov, Sokolov - Deviatkin, Vuckovic - Inarkiev, and Predojevic - Sjugirov.
